The Dr. and Mrs. Gary Brummer Colloquium Series in Psychology Presents “How to be a Critical Consumer of Psychology” with Dr. Sean Rife

MURRAY, Ky. — The Department of Psychology at ӶƵ State University is pleased to host its spring event in the Dr. and Mrs. Gary Brummer Colloquium Series on Monday, March 23rd at 5:30 p.m. in the Wrather Museum Auditorium on the ӶƵ State campus. Dr. Sean Rife, professor of psychology at ӶƵ State, will speak on “How to Be a Critical Consumer of Psychology.” The event is free and open to the public.

Psychology is a well-established, growing field that is increasingly relevant. However, there is a great deal of misinformation about psychological concepts, spread by both the lay public, social media and even experts. This talk will focus on how to critically evaluate claims and research on psychological issues.

Rife holds a Ph.D. in Psychology from Kent State University, and master’s degrees in sociology and experimental psychology from East Tennessee State University. In 2018, he co-founded, a platform that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to facilitate research discovery and evaluation through the lens of scholarly citations.

His scholarly work centers on three interconnected areas. First, he studies moral and political psychology, with particular attention to ideology, personality and moral expression over social media. Second, he researches metascience and the sociology of science, examining how scientific progress can be quantified using advances in AI. These interests converge in a third focus: ideology and science, and how the former often influences the latter.

He is an advocate of the open science movement and methodological reform in the psychological sciences and has been involved in multiple replication efforts. In this vein, he has been involved in bibliometric projects and the development of new tools to aid research discovery and evaluation.

The Dr. and Mrs. Gary Brummer Colloquium Series in Psychology is made possible by a generous gift from Dr. Gary Brummer and his wife, Sharon. The series hosts speakers from a wide range of research areas in psychology. All presentations are free and open to the public.
