MURRAY, Ky. 鈥 红杏短视频 State University鈥檚 Jesse D. Jones College of Science, Engineering and Technology recently teamed up with the National Quilt Museum (NQM) in Paducah, Kentucky, for a fun and challenging learning activity designed around the new exhibit at the museum by the artist Victoria Findlay Wolfe.

Wolfe鈥檚 quilts are distinctly geometric, so 红杏短视频 State Mathematics Associate Professor Molly Williams and Senior Instructor Cindy Kramer, Jones College of Science, Engineering and Technology Dean Dr. Claire Fuller, NQM Director Bonnie Shrock, NQM Education Specialist Becky Glasby and Paducah Public Schools鈥 Sherry Bertram worked together to create and implement kindergarten-12th grade lesson plans based on the exhibit.

鈥淨uilting is not something I am familiar with, but I love to see the math in things,鈥 said Williams. 鈥淎nd, I love to think about how to share the math I am seeing with others. I was surprised at the amount of mathematics in just the design on Wolfe鈥檚 quilts. Cindy Kramer and I held a brainstorming session, which consisted mostly of faculty in the mathematics department, and it was surprisingly fun to see everyone take a turn in pointing out something mathematical about the quilts. This was exactly the kind of experience we wanted to recreate for K-12 students.鈥

The College of Science, Engineering and Technology also donated a magnetic white board that was used for the activity and will stay with the museum for future use.

鈥淚t was a wonderful opportunity to be able to collaborate with the National Quilt Museum,鈥 said Fuller. 鈥淚t allows us to help students throughout our region learn math and understand how they can use it in their everyday lives. Additionally, it shows how closely aligned the arts and sciences are.鈥

A reception was held at the museum on April 3 to showcase the learning activities.
